Have I got what it takes to be a van driver?
A van
Our van drivers are self employed and must have their own van. Due to the bulky nature of a lot of our freight, vans must be LWB (long wheel base), hi-roof and white in colour. If you have a small Ford Transit Connect, for example, unfortunately it isn’t good enough for our requirements. It must be something large such as a LWB Iveco Daily, VW Crafter or Mercedes Sprinter. Generally it should have 4.3m loading length and 1.35m loading width.
Your van must not be older than 6 years old on entry to the fleet, and may never be older than 8 years old when in the fleet. All vans must be sign written to our design, which we provide, at your cost. There are no exceptions to this rule.
The work ethic
The hours are long and the work is hard, there’s no denying it. You must be prepared to be in our yard by 0600am in the morning, and ready to work hard. It’s a team effort to get the all freight and paperwork sorted so that everyone can start their deliveries as soon as possible. Somedays you may not finish until 0600pm or later, so it’s a long day. It goes without saying you’d need excellent geographical knowledge, and you must be energetic as some drivers on average cover 30-50 drops per day, plus collections, over a very large rural area. Therefore time is of the essence to get your drops off safely and quickly as the distance between deliveries can sometimes be as much as 10 miles. This isn’t your everyday city based van driving job!
Attitude, appearance and will to thrive
To the customers you are the face of Speed, so you must dress smartly and be polite at all times. If you are a budding salesman on the road, you will thrive at Speed. As a van driver, if you can get us some sales leads in your area, we can get the customers on board and you will benefit from the collections.
What can I expect to earn?
If we haven’t put you off already, don’t worry – the rewards can be great. Our self-employed van drivers are paid on a drop rate, and after 3 months you should be earning in the region of £800 per week. Payment is twice monthly into your bank account, and there is no need to worry invoicing as it is all self billing off our bespoke system. You will have a full report every day so you can check everything is in order for the days deliveries and collections.
We’ll give you the deliveries day-to-day, but you will benefit the most if you are able to help us find the customers in your area, as you will receive a portion of the revenue from collections.
