IDW Delivery
IDW freight or “Irregular Dimensions and Weight” freight is a relatively new area of the distribution industry. Put simply, IDW freight is one of the following:
- Too heavy for one man to lift (over 25kg in weight). For example: an engine or washing machine.
- Too long for one man to carry (greater than 3m in length). For example: a lamp-post or skirting board.
- Of high volumetric dimensions, but of a very low weight/density, so that it consumes a lot of space in our vehicles. For example: a giant bag of polystyrene packing materials.
For our IDW freight, we use the UK network Nightfreight, who are specialists in the carriage of IDW goods as well as ordinary parcels. They are unique in this respect as other big name parcel networks are unable to cater for both types of non-palletised goods.
Irregular weight (>25kg) freight

Weighing in at 50kg, this reel is an example of irregular weight freight.
If you have non-palletised freight that weighs more than 25kg, it will be subject to our IDW rate schedule. The way we price consignments of irregular weight is by a weight surcharge. You will pay a surcharge per kilogram. For more information, please contact us.
Irregular length (>3m) freight

This brass pipe is over 3m long.
No matter how long your goods are, we can carry them. As above for irregular weight consignments, there is also a surcharge that takes into account the length of your goods, and therefore which specialist vehicles and handling are required to deliver it. Consignments between the lengths of 3 and 6m long are subject to an irregular length surcharge. Anything over 6m is classed as “out of gauge” therefore may require a special vehicle for both collection and delivery. Rest assured though, we can still deliver it.
Volumetric freight
This is a tricky one. If your goods are of awkwardly large dimensions (and therefore may consume a large amount of space on our vehicles), but are of very low weight for their size, they may be subject to a volumetric rate. In this scenario, we use a volumetric rate equation to calculate how much your parcel should weigh for the size of it, and you will be billed this rate.
